Happy pigs are Healthy pigs - FAQ's - 2008

Q 1. I am considering whether to take a young gilt to a show this year for the first time. I also sell a few weaners from time to time. I only have a few sows so do I have to follow the 20 day standstill when the gilt returns from the show.

Q 2. I keep a few GOS sows and always try to attend them when birthing. I am never sure when they have completed their farrowing and when I can relax! Can you help?

Q 3. The price of purchased feed for my pigs has increased markedly, can I feed potatoes to help reduce costs but without prejudicing their health?

Q 4. My gilt has just produced her first litter. I was so disappointed because she presented only three live pigs and then, what I can only describe as black packets of membrane. Could this be the result of some form of poison?

Q 5. I have the opportunity to obtain considerable quantities of waste vegetables from a farm that supplies a supermarket .Are there any aspects that I should be aware of when feeding cabbage& lettuce etc to my pigs?

 Q 6. Some of my sows have a round swelling, ping pong ball size, on the side of their necks. What causes these and what should I do?
