Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs, Gloucester cattle and Cotswold sheep are coming together once again for a grand Show & Sale at Cirencester Livestock Market on Saturday 2nd August. Other events taking place alongside include a sale of poultry and waterfowl and a Farmers’ Market of local produce. And it’s all free for visitors and buyers alike!

This annual event was cancelled last year when Foot & Mouth disease was identified in Surrey on the evening before the sale but this year the organisers are confident that no such ill luck will spoil this great event. It attracts buyers and interested admirers from far and wide which is why Cirencester Market is such an ideal location being on the main A417/419 trunk road between the M4 and M5 about three miles south of Cirencester.

Gloucestershire is almost unique among British counties in having in existence cattle, sheep and pigs all originating in the area. All three are classified as rare breeds by DEFRA although numbers are gradually improving for each of them as farmers and smallholders begin to once again appreciate the virtues of such old-fashioned breeds in terms of ease of management, cost of production and meat (and milk and wool) quality.

This is an ideal opportunity to come along and see the county’s breeds all under one roof. If you are thinking of keeping livestock for the first time or changing or expanding to include one of these breeds, this is an opportunity you cannot afford to miss.
